About (Jan 2003)

I believe that reading is becoming a lost art.

I believe that reading is better for the mind than TV or movies.

I believe that literacy starts at home with a good book and a good example.

I believe the best way for schools to encourage reading is to let students read what they like even if it means skipping the classics.

I believe books that entertain also teach.

I believe that books inspire the imagination.

I believe the more I read, the better I write.

I believe that reading shows we're not alone and gives insight into human nature.

I believe that reading helps us master our language.

I believe that reading is one of the best cures for boredom.

I believe that reading helps keep us healthy.

I believe a good book is meant to be shared.

Sharing is what this log is about.

Inspired by others who have joined a year of reading, I present my book log which chronicles my own journey of reading. Here I share the books I read, a brief synopsis, and my opinions, and invite discussion on the books and on reading.

Unless otherwise noted, all books reviewed have been purchased by me.

I will no longer be linking to Amazon and no longer recommending Amazon as a place to purchase books I review. Amazon has repeatedly used bully tactics to reinforce its policies, even if those tactics cause harm to authors or limit customer choices. Amazon usually apologizes for the events after the fact, but that they continue to use the same methods makes those apologies hollow. I will not purchase from or encourage others to purchase from a business that chooses to take from the pockets of authors (who as a whole earn a lot less than general public realizes) and decide what the public should and should not read.
